💡About the Flashforge AD5X

The Flashforge AD5X, released June 2025, brings built-in 4-color multicolor to an open-frame CoreXY at $399. Its Intelligent Filament System (IFS) holds 4 spools in a compact unit mounted on the printer. The AD5X runs OrcaSlicer for local-only control with no cloud dependency, and ships with a hardened steel nozzle as standard. An optional enclosure kit ($49.99) is available separately.

  • Built-in 4-color multicolor at $399

The AD5X undercuts comparable multicolor setups on price with IFS built directly into the printer — no separate accessory needed.

  • OrcaSlicer with local-only control

No cloud dependency or mandatory account. OrcaSlicer is community-standard open-source slicer software — familiar to most experienced makers.

  • Hardened steel nozzle as standard

Ships ready for PLA-CF and PETG-CF without requiring a nozzle upgrade — a genuine differentiator at this price point.

🎯Who is this for?

Budget-conscious makers who want built-in 4-color multicolor printing under $400 — primarily for PLA and PETG. Open frame, so not suited for ABS or engineering filaments without the add-on enclosure.

FAQs

AD5X vs Bambu A1 Combo — which multicolor printer is better value?

The AD5X ($399) has built-in 4-color IFS multicolor with no separate accessory needed. The Bambu A1 Combo costs more but comes with Bambu's AMS Lite — a more mature, better-documented multicolor system with a far larger community. Bambu Studio is also significantly more polished than FlashPrint. If price is the priority and you are comfortable with a newer ecosystem, the AD5X delivers. For the better long-term experience, the Bambu Combo is worth the premium.

Does the AD5X need an enclosure for ABS?

Yes — without the optional enclosure kit ($49.99), ABS and ASA are unreliable on the AD5X. Even with the kit, it provides only semi-enclosed coverage. For consistent ABS results, a fully enclosed printer with active chamber heating is strongly recommended. The AD5X is best suited to PLA, PETG, and TPU multicolor printing.

What is Flashforge IFS and how does it compare to Bambu AMS?

IFS (Intelligent Filament System) is Flashforge's 4-filament switcher — comparable in concept to Bambu's AMS Lite. It holds 4 spools and switches between them mid-print, producing some purge waste at each colour transition. The Bambu AMS is a more mature system with a larger community and better slicer integration. The IFS is newer with less community documentation, but delivers the same 4-color capability at a lower all-in price.
